A Note From Bodie

Jul 05, 2007

  Parents and Students,

I have been in student ministry for many years now. I am still very passionate about students and encouraging them to draw closer to Christ. Unfortunately, I have learned a few sad facts about ministry. One fact I have learned is that when spiritual commitments increase, attendance typically decreases. To me this is an oxymoron. I believe that commitment should cause us to rise up, but instead when the bar is raised some decide that they do not want to be involved. You see, I believe in discipleship. Discipleship is the one thing that will keep our students focused on Christ instead of the world.

Each year our student ministry changes, and each year—because of this change—we are expecting new students to rise up and take the challenge of leadership. I believe God is calling students to be leaders so that their lives will be shaped for the future. I want to give students opportunities to explore following Christ. Raising the bar will help students reach new heights in their relationship with God. My challenge to students is that they will rise up and grow in Christ.

When I first started in youth ministry, this concept of attendance decreasing as spiritual-commitment levels increased worked against my general line of thinking. Now that I understand this increase/decrease concept, I’m able to work with the students who want to grow in their faith on a more personal level.

A Note From Bodie

Apr 07, 2008

Many of you may ask the question, “Why does Bodi concentrate so much on missions, and why does he want the students to serve from here to Fort Worth to Ukraine?” Well, there is a very good answer to that question. I believe that through serving and doing ministry, students will find their call in life. They will be able to know that God has a definite purpose for them. I know that as a parent we may not want our child to go and serve homeless, or to go overseas for the simple fact that we are afraid for their safety. But I believe that it is in these experiences that students come to a place where they hear the voice of God. It is not that all or most of the students are going to be called into missions, but it is in serving that we realize that God wants us to serve Him with our whole life. He wants us to serve others with the gifts, abilities, and talents that He has given us. Whether He wants us to be a school teacher or an international missionary, God wants us to serve Him with  everything.

Last week we had the blessing and opportunity to go to Fort Worth, Texas to serve with Beautiful Feet Ministries. Beautiful Feet is a place that is very dear to my heart. I had the blessing of serving with this ministry while I was in seminary. We were able to serve the homeless in many capacities such as, share the gospel, paint, mow, cook and serve food, and pray with many, many different people. We were even able to perform a drama on the streets of Fort Worth in three different neighborhoods around Beautiful Feet. Our students served God with a full heart, and He was blessed by their faith. I know as their student minister, I was very proud of every student and adult who went with us last week. Students did get to hear the voice of God, and they came closer to realizing that God has a purpose for their lives. One middle school student said, “I believe that God wants me to help people.” That is what it is all about.

I have one more praise to share with you. Although I believe without a doubt that I am called to take students overseas, I really stress over the money that is required to take a large group overseas. Well, this year I honestly decided to put all of my concerns regarding money into God’s hands. I believe, because of the faith of the team, we have the whole trip paid for and more. We have even cancelled a couple of upcoming fundraisers. I have never been able to cancel fundraisers before this year. We have all of our money two months before the deadline. God is so good! He definitely has a plan for us as a team. On another note, be praying for Allison Jackson as she will be spending the ENTIRE summer in Ukraine working with orphans. I am so proud of her.
